16th CENTURY MARITIME DEFENSE TOWER
History and Architecture of Torre Bennistra
Torre Bennistra served as a coastal defense tower within the network of Sicily's coastal towers. Constructed in the sixteenth century, it stands on the oldest foundations, featuring a circular plan approximately 5.50 meters in diameter.
It was an integral part of the defensive system for monitoring Saracen ships, maintaining visual contact with the Tower of Capo Rama and the Tower Alba of Terrasini to the east.
In 2015, the tower underwent a full restoration and was reopened for community use.
Strikingly illuminated to highlight the stonework, it creates a dramatic visual impact, enhanced by eighteen LED projectors.
